March 22, 2009 : 1:35 PMWhy there will be no Spider-Man 4Chances are there will never be a Spider-Man 4 or an Iron Man 2. There will be a 4th Spider-Man movie but it won't be named Spiderman 4. Why? Because every studio now is against using numbers in their squeals. Every! C'mon you are exaggerating. Do we have The Dark Knight to blame for this as well? Maybe..... Indiana Jones has been doing it for decades but The Dark Knight is different as it's a film that didn't even share the same name as it's other predecessors and it made the studio a shit load of cash. Also movies that aren't even a seqel are being primed for it. Like the recent X-Men Origins of G.I Joe movie. Take the recent examples below and tell me this is not a trend.
Imagine if a kid who has been in a coma for 15 years wakes up today. Good fucking luck trying to work out which Harry Potter to watch first. In Australia (and Asia) though we are still using numbers. This dropping of the numbers is a USA thing. If I had it my way every poster which is a sequel will be required to have someone doing the peace sign to signify the number 2 Luckily we still have the SAW series holding the flag for numbered squeals. Although they do use roman numerals so it technically doesn't count. And when studios must use numbers they do it ironically like Tr2n or H2 or Taking of Phelem 123. Oh wait that last one doesn't make sense. I know I've missed a bunch so let me know in the comments.

August 25, 2008 : 11:49 PMThe New Action Hero KingI just saw the Transporter 3 trailer and thought of this. Remember when Arnie was the biggest film star in the world? Remember when action films were the staple diet of many at the cinemas? Ahh yeah good times. Then something happened. No new talent worth their salt came up to the plate. Sure Jackie Chan and Jet Li are still kicking it but it's not new Arnie. I had high hopes for The Rock until the spat of comedies and the name change. Oh Dwayne I ripped my poster off the wall years ago. So who's the big action stars of today (with more films still left in them) Vin Diesel? Will Smith? Tom Cruise? Matt Damon? The Rock? Christian Bale? Marky Mark? Keanu? Brendan Fraser!!! The only one staying true to 80's action is Jason Stanham. It's been a staple diet of movies where people get kicked in the head. That's all you want from your action stars. No Disney movies, no light heartered comedies, no dramadies, special interest movies. Just Big silly action movies with "turn to your mate and go ahh F yeah scenes" and the occasional T&A. Throw in a couple of jokes and a helicopter exploding and it's a good night at the movies. Jason's no Arnie but he's all we've got. If we don't support him and more like him we'll end up with Shia LaBeouf vs Hayden Christensen in 2020's big action blockbuster. And that's just fucking scary. Put all these guys in the Thunderdome as see which one leaves. Jason, The Rock and Vinny would probably have the most fight in them, followed by Christian Bale but then rest would go down like a sack of wet socks. Keanu Reeves vs Brendan Fraser is something I'd actually like to see. My money would be on Brendan though.

July 14, 2008 : 10:25 PMI am BatmanI just saw Batman Dark Knight. Wholly blockbusters it was pretty damn solid. Sure it's weird (this was pointed out to me after the film) that Bruce Wayne still talks in his silly deep Batman voice even to people who know who he is and there were a few BS tech moments but the flow, the story, the script and the acting were all solid as a rock. Iron Man set the bar and Batman jumped his Batbike over it. The comic book flick can no longer be out down as a sub genre of film. This stands up there with the best entertainment you can get in a cinema. This and Pineapple Express have given me joy in the cinema lately for totally different reasons.

March 16, 2008 : 2:14 PMBe Kind RewindI think this will be the last film that any studio outside of France will let Michel Gondry write and direct. Why? Because all the films he writes are just excuses for him to do his weird (but always fun) hand made shit and then strong a movie around them. Oh wait didn't he co-write Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind?!?! And that was brilliant. Um yeah but he was riding shotgun to Charlie Kaufman who actually knows that a movie must entertain the audience. Not pay for the directors on screen masturbation. Why else would someone drop Michel. Well maybe the fact Be Kind rewind bombed at the box office. Doing a sad 7M in the USA with a reported 20M budget. Ouch! I don't think DVD rentals will save this puppy. Will Farrel is getting his ass handed to him over Semi Pro's poorer than usual BO performance. And it still brought in 14m in the opening week! So the actual movie itself was really flat. Jack Black was a cliche of himself and Mos Def doesn't really have much of a persona. It's as if he's playing a idiot savant but badly when the role isn't an idiot savant. The best part about the film is the synopsis. I found myself not laughing in the film and was even a bit bored. The "oh cool it's a cardboard car" or "haha funny it's a hand made tin foil gun" aren't exactly hilarious moments. You don't even get to see the sweded films. Just the makings of. Check the official site for snippets of the sweded films. Here Gondry swedes his own trailer for the film. hahahah how does he do it? Michel should stick to making film clips, visual effects and short films. That way his energy can go into something <10 minutes and you don't mind it doesn't make sense. Or at least start with someone else's good script and go from there. He seems to only think in one dimension and that's through the smear of his own ego and talent. If I had of downloaded Be Kind Rewind I would have been bummed I wasted the bandwidth.

February 21, 2008 : 11:01 AMFebruary 6, 2008 : 11:01 PMKing of Kong Screening
I saw King of Kong tonight at a Gamesport free screening. The film was great but there was just 15 people at the screening. This comes after being told the screening was fully booked. The Gamespot crew delayed the start by 15 minutes thinking people were late but I guess everyone forgot. Every seat had a promo postcard on it so they were expecting more people. I'm bummed as a few people at work wanted to see the flick and I had to say it was fully booked. The film is a must see for anyone who likes video games. It reminded me of Spellbound but this doco has good guys, bad guys, a history lesson and a tale of perseverance to hook you.

The quality is much better and you can actually upload HD footage and they present it in HD! I'm not so concerned with views to these videos so Vimeo is perfect. There is a smaller user base on the site so the likely hood of your video getting random views is a lot less. But if quality is what you're after then Vimeo is the way to go. Check out my video channel. I have up so far. I have lots more boring travel videos to upload too.

June 29, 2007 : 12:34 AMTransformers
I got to see Transformers tonight on its opening night. Which is weird as Australia gets to see the film almost a week before the USA. I guess we get some payback for Grindhouse (which I got to see in the US anyway so I'm not that worried) The cinema was packed with geeks with one wearing an Optimus Prime mask. The film is enjoyable even with the extra think M.Bay treatment over the top. There are some gunienly funny scenes and some great action moments. Although it was alot of shooting from the transformers rather than them going at it with fists. When they does happen it's over pretty fast. (I don't remember any Deceptacon getting it's head ripped off in the cartoon) Then you have the camera spinning around the actors, the holding hands scenes, the old people being stupid but the young sexy stars know what to do bits. By the end of the 2.5 hrs you're a little underwhelmed by the film. It all ends happy, no one dies and the earth is saved for another sequal. It's worth seeing if you're a fan (they play to the fans quite a bit) and I look forward to the DVD with all the extras.
Geek Rant: While I wasn't the biggest Transformers fan I still enjoyed the cartoon series and read a few comics/books. What I loved about them was their design. This 2007 movie makes all the Transformers look the same. They really lost all their personality. They look cool, the testures and small details but from a distance really look boring. Megatron looked no different than Skyscream and they both looked like a bunch or bent spoons. I'm not sure of they wanted them to be more mechanically correct or just look more tech but they have all lost their personality. And good luck to any Mum who wants to bake a Optimus Prime cake. The new ones are too detailed to even start.

March 26, 2007 : 7:49 PMThe Only Grind House Review You need TO readThis is quite possibly the funniest review I've ever read. Here's a few take aways. DEATH PROOF is about this dude, Driver Mike, and he’s played by Kurt Plissken, and goddamn but that dude just gets more bad-ass as he gets older. You know how Sly Stallone kind of looks like Bea Arthur now, and Jean-Claude Van Damme looks like Ally Sheedy? Well, Kurt Plissken looks like a dumpster full of drop kicks. He could fuck a bulldozer into eight Mini Coopers. Fuck, I should pitch that to someone. That’s what GRINDHOUSE is. It’s a taquito buffet that you puke up after getting hit with a motorcycle, and it turns into a bikini chick that blows you and kills your boss with a hammer.

December 31, 2006 : 1:59 PMUFC and PRIDEI saw an episode of The Ultimate Fighter last week and have since been wanting to see more of UFC. Then I found out about the Japanese version PRIDE and after seeing this video I think the PRIDE stuff looks alot more hardcore. I didn't see many kicks in any of the UFC stuff. Just moreboxing and then sitting on a guy. This PRIDE stuff looks more like Kick boxing and a little more hardcore. You can't watch this and not go ouch! CHeck the rules too. They allow everything except an elbow to the head?! Which is weird as kick boxing allows this. * PRIDE allows kicking and kneeing the head of a downed opponent who is on his back. This is considered a foul in the Unified Rules, which only allows kicks and knees to the body of a downed opponent. * PRIDE allows a fighter to stomp a downed opponent. This is considered a foul in the Unified Rules. * PRIDE allows a fighter to spike an opponent. This is considered a foul in the Unified Rules. * PRIDE does not allow elbow strikes to the head. The Unified rules allows elbows provided they are not striking directly down with the point of the elbow. * PRIDE's matches include a ten minute first round, with two minute rest periods. The Unified rules allow rounds no longer than five minutes, with rest periods not exceeding one minute. * PRIDE's matches are not judged on the ten point must system, rather judges score the whole fight. The Unified rules call for all matches to be judged using the ten point must system. Stomping = allowed. But elbows are bad?!

I was lucky enough to see a preview screening of Borat last week. It was 95% complete with the extra 5 I'm guessing being some sound editing and the end titles. If you are fan of Borat on the ALi-G show then you will love this movie. Just when you think Borat wont go there he does and more. It’s one of the most original and funny films you'll see this year while still being able to pack some subliminal messages about racism and society. Brad was most freaked out by the extreme Christians but I think I was most freaked out by the naked male fighting. It's due for release in November here in Australia and we are hopefully going to do some work for the films release. Supposedly all ideas need to get the personal approval or Sasha Cohen which is pretty cool. I love it when celebs have to approve stuff. We've had delays while J-Lo approved stuff and now where waiting for Paul Hogan to approve a game we are making. Hurry up Hoags!!!

August 23, 2006 : 9:14 PMClerks 2 and KEVIN SMITH in Conversation
I was lucky to get a free ticket for the Aussie premiere of Clerks 2 at the State Theatre. What was even better was having Kevin Smith do 3 hrs of Q&A after the film with the fans. This was hosted by Popcorn Taxi which put on some great shows. They sell out really fast so I was lucky to get a ticket how I did. Thanks Julian! The film itself was pretty funny and contained a few pretty crude scenes that the fans will get off on. Talk off ass to mouth, a donkey sex scene, debates over Star Wars Vs LOTR and cameos from a few famous faces. The best part for me was hearing Kevin Smith talk and I'm not even a huge fan. The guy knew how to work an audience, which was all ultra geek, fan boys, but he was polite, funny and quick. He also gave really good answers to every question. It was almost like a standup routine with questions form the audience. I’d pay just to here him speak again. I now have to rent the original Clerks as I hardly remember it. I give Clerks 2: 7.5 /10 and recommend anyone who likes a crude comedy to check it out.

It's one of my fav tracks from when I was studying Crastal Method's "Trip Like I Do" from the Spawn Soundtrack. I havent even seen the movie! I'm happy with how it turned out though and once I et a real editing program (IMovie is pretty limited) then I can really start to stretch my directors muscle. February 24, 2006 : 9:57 PMThe Hills Have Eyes
Also play the great 3D game here It's a remake of a classic Wes Craven (Nigtmare on Elm St) film by the same name. I'm usually pretty bad in horror films as I'm really squeamish but now I think it's all in my head, as I really enjoyed The Hills have Eyes and didn't think it was that gory at all. Rob (mr Horror himself), Brad, Christian and the others through it was very gory and felt a little disturbed. I did jump about 10 times and felt foolish for falling for all the old tricks (peopel jumping at windows etc etc) but the audio was cranked in the screening room so everything had huge impact. I guess to me someone getting a pick axe to the head is very comical rather than disturbing. Someone getting their lips scissored off to me is disturbing. I haven’t seen the original but I don’t think this matters much. The plot is about a bunch of mutant miners who control an area of the Arizona dessert and a family who get stuck in their territory. There’s a nice solid story behind the film and it looks amazing. The girl from LOST (the one who had the baby) is in it and a mutant that looks like a thin Gary Busey. There’s also a dude who looks like Rubber Johnny with a giant piñata head. It’s worth seeing even and there is a great scene with a freezer that really freaked me out. The Truffle rating of 8/10 as thats an enjoyable horror film.

February 11, 2006 : 3:35 PMMI3 The Hunt
I just completed ther first misison for Mission Impossible 3 Ultimate Hunt. Normally with these things you'd expect it to be quite simple but the first was relativly complicated. I had to download the Superbowl trailer for the movie and google the licence plate from that. Which was TPJ-527. Clicking the only link form that then tracks my mission as being complete. Check it out here on google Very cool, I'll be inetrested to see if they do a google earth mission and what other bits of technology will be used in the 14 remaining misisons.

February 10, 2006 : 9:31 PMGolden Tomato Awards 2005Check out the Golden Tomato Winners for 2005 Kung Fu Hustle won best foriegn release which is great. Thaat was my fav film for 2005 just ahead of The Incredibles. Serenity beat Star Wars for best Sci Fi release. The power of fans over franchise! Both movies were a little lacking but you can't go past the 4 armed light sabre fight from Star Wars 3

January 29, 2006 : 11:10 PMDate Movie
We saw Date Movie about 3 weeks ago and have since worked on the small online campaign for the movie. If you liked Scary Movie then this is your type of film. It takes the piss of all the chick flicks of the past 10 years and does it pretty well. There's also a great scene with Sophie Monk in slow motion in a bikini that goes for 5 minutes. Definetly boner material.

Bill Hicks Live DVD
His theory on using terminally ill people as stunt people in movies cracked me up as I had the same idea but to use people on death row. Why let these people die in isolation. Let them live forever on DVD being blown up by Arnie! There is quite a bit of Bill Hick's work on Amazon and I recommend chekcing it out. He's a hard hitting funny guy with a a social conciese.

December 16, 2005 : 9:02 PMKing KongI saw King Kong last night on the opening night and thought it was the best monkey movies I've seen all year. Jack Black was my fav but everyone in the film is great. Kong looks great as do all the effects. It's sad, its funny and its cheesy but it's all good cheese. Oh and it's 3 hrs long but you enjoy all of it. Just don't try and understand how Kong stops from breaking Naomi Watts' neck as he swings her around violently or how a person can outrun almost every animal in the dense jungle and you'll be fine.

Is Chuck Norris the new Hoff?
On paper Chuck is far superior to The Hoff. Here are a few things to consider 1: Chuck Norris has rumbled with Bruce Lee! I look forward to 2006 becoming The Year of the Roundhouse as we see the Hoff perish in a a fury of Chuck Roundhouses. If you could buy shares in Chuck right now it'd be a safe investment. They must be worth 2c right now?

September 7, 2005 : 11:56 PMMovie ReviewsI've seen more movie in the past 3 months than some entire years. Combination of movie money, Fox screenings and free entry thanks to knowing somone who works at the cinema has increased my movie intake 5x. Preview: (watched at Fox screening room) Into the Blue: 7.5/10 Night Watch: Cinema: The Island: 7/10 Wedding Crashers: 9/10 Land of the Dead: 5/10 DVD: Team America World Police: 8.5/10 The film I'm hanging to see is the all punch-fest Transporter 2. It looks to be a good action movie with all the BS you want and little to think about except how much it would hurt. And Kung Fu Hustle 2 has been announced!
