New York: City of Missed Photo Ops

Sadly even though I spent a week in NY I didnt get that many photos. I had a few hours at the end of the day but didn't take them to just wander the street and shoot. I got a few good photos which I'll post up soon but nothing to get excited about. Nothing I had to race back to the hotel to process.

Then I see an amazing photoblog like Bluejake (sample photo below) and I feel I missed out.
bluejake.jpg

Then I feel even worse when I see this building on Spring street is now open to the public and it's right in Manhatten.

Oh well all the more reason to come back. Manhatten alone is an amazing place and the outer suburbs all have the unique allure.

Hotel View

From my hotel here in LA I can just see the Hollywood sign. It's in the distant horizon. Close though I can see a neon sign saying Totally NUDE Girls!
Then right below me is a Jewish only primary school.

Currently in the US and A

I'm in NY right now and having a great time. I just went to the Comedy Celler and saw my first live stand up show. NY is spoilt for choice with 10+ comedy places to choose from. Sydney has 1 I think. I;m unsure as no one goes. Well no one I know.

Sadly I wasnt at the Laugh Factory last night to see Dave Chappelle do a 6hr set!! Ripped off! I only got 2 hrs.

I havent been able to take that many photos but I'll make sure to upload what I did when I'm back in the AU and S

M&Ms Adam's Family

mms_adams_family.jpg

The new TV campaign for M&M's dark features a remake of the Adam's Family intro but in M&Ms style.

Sadly you can't download/share the video and no desktops either. But with the Shrek 3 mini site I guess their attention is on that.

Filmed at Syndey's Darling Harbour. He gets a pretty good beat going from the arm bands and the ampled voice is someone from the audience he recorded just earlier live.

Jaiku

In an effort to road test things properly I have set up a Jaiku account. I'm always skeptical of this type of stuff but we'll see how it goes. As I'm off to NY and LA next week (fuck yeah!) on a biz trip it will be good to see how it works with my Mobile.

Bus Seat A-Hole

I got on the bus during the Easter break and sat down near the back. Only to find the person on the window seat was sitting at a 45 degree angle. I tapped his legs and asked him to move them and he said he couldn't fit as he's too tall.

The guy looked no taller then me and was slouching so I said just sit up. He then made a shitty effort and didn't move at all. I remarked that it was a shitty effort on his behalf and he just said "get over it" "oh and happy Easter."

So now I'm the bad guy? and a cranky Easter Scrooge for wanting to sit on at least half the seat.

This was followed up by two groups of loud talkers (the couple that decide to commentate the movie to each over and don't even bother turning their heads to speak) behind me in the cinemas while watching 300. After telling the first group to shut the fuck up I lost all will power to tell the second group. Mostly out of fear of being called the Easter Scrooge again and the fact I had nothing to throw at them. I almost tossed Ervi's sandles but reisited.

I've had the same thing at work with Rob. We'd be in a meeting and he'd tap the chair or table with his foot. I'd ask him to stop, then 5 min later he does it again. I ask to stop. The third time I just get annoyed at him. Then I feel like a dickhead then I'm confused and embarresed for the rest of the day. Maybe its my tact (or lack of) or maybe I'm just overally sensative to shit like that.

So I guess the morel of my story is I should have come up with a good retort to his "oh and happy Easter" comment but I couldn't and that's what probably hurt the most :)

Custom Motorbikes

If you like bikes you havebeen spoilt for eye candy lately with the amount of custom bike shops around. American Chopper has made Orange Country Choppers household names but they aren't the only ones making sexy looking bikes.

I'm not even a big nike person but I like things that look nice.

Deus Ex Machina:

Started by Dare Jennings of Mambo fame Deus celebrates custom motorbikes built from the humble Yamaha SR400s and TW220s. You get a different kind of cred by riding these bad boys. ie you don;t look like a twat with lots of money. You look like a real rider.

2007 A Kickass Year for Movies

OK in recent times the amount of good movies has been on the low side. You might want to go see maybe 3 films a year if that. But 2007 looks to be the best year yet, especially if your male, aged between 18-35 and slightly nerdy. Wholly shit that's me! Well "slightly" might be an overstatement or is that understatement?

In no particular order here is the list of killer flicks this year.

300

300 Poster

I've had a boner for this since last year!

GrindHouse

Grindhouse poster

I'm already frothing at the mouth for this!
28 Weeks Later

Sunshine

Seen it already and it kicks ass
Die Hard 4.0

Transformers

Michael Bay mmmm maybe.
Spiderman 3

Peter Peter
The Bourne Ultimatum

The new Bond!
Fantastic 4 Rise of the Silver Surfer

I'll give this as much benifit of the doubt as Transformers.

So much testosterone you won't be able to see the colour pink for a week. Normally the cinemas are filled with chick flicks and boring drama crap. This year we have everything from killer robots, superheroes to retro pulp horror films.

Of course you need a few films to take your girlfriend along to. For that we have

The Simpsons Movie

Simpons movie poster

It's finally here!
Pirates 3

Jerry & Johnny we love you
Shrek 3

They are on a roll with this franchise.
Ratatouille

Three words Brad Bird + Pixar

Wholly shit. I better go and buy some movie vouchers now!
This means that 2008 will probably be a sad year for movies as the studios will need to rest and take a break. So far only Iron Man is boner worthy.

Dexter and the Rise of Good TV

Dexter_intro.png

With HBO showing the world that good TV can make money it seems we are now spoilet for choice when it comes to TV. HBO still has the lions share of kick ass TV with Rome, Entourage, Deadwood, Carnivale but Showtime seems to have started to make a mark for itself with Weeds and the new show which I've heard nothing about in Australia but now love Dexter.

Sadly you can only access the official site if you are based in the US.

From the Wikipedia page on the show:
Dexter is a Showtime original television series starring Michael C. Hall as serial killer Dexter Morgan, who works as a forensics analyst specializing in bloodstain pattern analysis for the Miami-Dade Police Department. The series is based on the novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay. I'll have to add that to my "to read" list.

Will we see Dexter on TV here in Australia? We've already had Weeds (which I'm not sure went too well). For me it's a non issue as downloading the show is the only way to quench my thirst for good TV.

It's sad that Kath and Kim is the only show in recent times to find an audience outside of Australia. Home & Away and Neighbours don't count.

Semi Permanent Sydney 2007 Review

I have been practicing my "Baby Cakes" voice for an audio review of Semi Permanent as I feel this will be the best way to describe the last two days of the conference. I'm not sure why I just love his tone.
Until then here's a quick rundown on what I liked and didn't.

The MC:
Note to Andrew and Murry. Never pick an MC for an event based on how good her legs look in shorts. The MC they was as funny as clubbed seals and about as smart as a belt buckle.

Speakers:
Overall the speakers were a mixed bunch. There was little in "headliners" like the Joshua Davis of the past but it was Nash Edgerton (stunt man/director/actor) that was the highlight for me. The talented blue collar Aussie had everyone buzzing after his talk. He's like an Australian Sam Ramni (who does stunts) and I wouldn't be surprised if he moves onto bigger and better things in the next few years.

Mike O'Meally was another speaker that, like Nash, had a story to tell and told it well. Other highlights were James Jean and Method studios who not only showed good work but some of the stories being the work too. Method's creative director was a very charismatic French guy that really knew how to work the accent with his French humour.

The one person I actually knew and admired from the speaker list beforehand was Dave Kinsey and sadly he seemed to read his talk, even stumbling over parts he'd written. His work is amazing yet he's a quite restrained guy. There's a big difference between a written interview and a talk and I feel he prepared his talk like a written essay.

All in all the conference was good but it could have been great.

Below is the latest episode of Baby Cakes just incase you haven't met him.

Oh I'm writing this review very early into the morning as I had the free V drink and can't sleep.
